My last day…

31st July 2017

Today is my last day at City Bridge Trust (CBT).  In my previous blog, published in May 2017, I spoke about being on the ‘home straight’ of my year-long secondment to CBT, from the Big Lottery Fund.  A lot has changed in the last two months; a fitting and not in the least surprising reflection of my time here as a whole.

One last blog won’t do justice to all of the many things I could reflect on and share with you all.  I’ve actively avoided writing it, as doing so further underlines what my brain has yet to fully realise – I am leaving CBT today.  So, the key news to highlight first is that happily CBT’s next strategy, Bridging Divides, has been fully approved by both the CBT Committee and the City of London Corporation’s Court of Common Council.  Put simply, the Court is the Corporation’s primary decision-making body, and gaining their unanimous approval and support for the strategy was so pleasing for us all here at CBT.

I think that developing this strategy allowed CBT to consider carefully the kinds of increasingly complex social problems it tackles; the approaches it takes to investing in these matters and the way in which it can use its power and partnerships to make positive change happen.  Through this strategy CBT will think about how it can make the most positive impact on reducing inequality and creating cohesive communities, whilst also determining its role in improving the success and resilience of London’s civil society.  No mean feat, and causes that are aligned and common to many other funders and people we spoke to in this last year.

It’s been a real pleasure working with the CBT team and the many hundreds of people who have engaged with this review in various ways.  I have been challenged, inspired and supported throughout my time here, and am immensely proud of what has been achieved by us all working together.  I can’t wait to see how CBT will bring this strategy to life, and I am sure that they will do it with their usual levels of care, confidence and integrity.  For those of you that don’t know, CBT’s Deputy Director, Jenny Field, will be leading on this work.

Finally, a little note on me about where I am heading next, in case it’s of interest.   Rather than return to my substantive role at the Big Lottery Fund, I successfully applied for a new role at the City of London Corporation, to support with the design and delivery of their corporate strategy for 2018 to 2023.  I am really excited to begin this role tomorrow, which sits at the heart of the organisation.  It presents a real opportunity to support and shape the work that it does across a wide range of public, private and civil society agendas, and I am excited to be involved in this way.

I’m looking forward to staying in touch with you all in the usual ways as I embark on my next strategy-related work adventure!

Best for now,

Sufina Ahmad, Head of Strategic Review
