Once a year, the City Bridge Trust team takes a day out of the office to volunteer at one of the organisations which we fund. Hampstead Heath, Deptford Creekside and the Charlie Chaplin Adventure Playground are just a few of the groups we have previously visited. This year, we headed down to Brockwell Park Community Greenhouses in Lambeth. This fantastic community resource gives local people the opportunity to learn about horticulture and help grow a range of fruits, herbs and vegetables. These are chosen by local people and so are representative of the diverse nature of the community, but also serve to bring people together and act as a cultural exchange. As well as having a range of produce for sale, the site is also used to host to a number of projects, as well as groups from local schools.
During our day at the Community Greenhouses, we worked on a number of tasks that the organisation wanted help with. The focus was on one particular area of the site which needed weeding, tidying up and then re-laid with fresh wood chippings. This proved hard work for the team, but very satisfying as by the end of the day the fruits of our labour were apparent. We were greatly helped by the fantastic weather, which remained dry throughout. As ever, the lunch proved to be a great highlight of the day as several of the team showed off their cooking and baking talents.
Many thanks again to Brockwell Park Community Greenhouses for hosting us.
