Sustainable City
Awards 2009
The Sustainable City Awards were established in 2001 by the
City of London and are
led in partnership with 20 organisations, including
livery companies, trade bodies, voluntary sector organisations and
businesses. The 2009 awards, presented by environmentalist Zac
Goldsmith in a ceremony at Mansion House on 19 February,
recognise and reward outstanding achievement across the three
pillars of sustainable development: the environment, social issues
and the economy.
The City Bridge Trust works in partnership with the
Worshipful Company of
Pattenmakers to run the award category 'Access to Goods and
Services for Disadvantaged Communities'. The Pattenmakers sponsor
the award and two members of the Trust's Grants Committee sit with
them on the panel to select the category winner and runner-up.
This year's category winner is the
Rushey Green Time Bank which was one
of the first of its type to be established in the UK. Since 1999 it
has proven to be a radical, empowering and transformational form of
volunteering that gives self-confidence to people who had
previously been passive recipients of care. There was no doubt in
the judges' minds that Rushey Green Time Bank is a shining example
of local sustainability in action, and a splendid example for
others to follow.
Highly commended in this category
is East London Food Access, a
social enterprise formed of a network of co-ops, projects and
organisations which are helping to improve and promote access to
fresh fruit and vegetables. ELFA's projects include the provision
of free fruit to schools and nurseries throughout Hackney. By
encouraging healthy lifestyle choices, EFLA is making a fundamental
contribution to the health and well-being of some of London's most
vulnerable communities.
The following organisations were also shortlisted for an award:
Southall Black
Sisters,
Horniman Museum and Gardens
and Dulwich Picture
Gallery.
Congratulations to these organisations and to all the other
entrants, which were of a very high quality indeed.
